Secondhand land | Chiatura

A century ago, a mine was first used to extract manganese in the villages of Imereti. After the collapse of the union, everything stopped. The "black gold" buried in the ground was once again returned at the beginning of the 2000s. Now, manganese is mined underground and above, in an open pit manner.

For the people of Chiatura, burying ore in their own yards is the only hope for a better life. That's why they dig around their house, harvest fields, vineyards, or fruit trees. They take a risk, even though they know they might lose everything, but there's a chance they'll hit the jackpot, if not, at least they will have enough to get them through the winter.
